Wii Play recieves top honour as Nintendo’s best selling Wii game in US

Party game with free Wiimote beats Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit as top-selling US Wii game.

Nintendo revealed today a list of their top-selling first and third party US Wii games, revealing that the best selling game on the Wii in America (excluding Wii Sports for obvious reasons) is Wii Play. Wii Play was a launch title that was incredibly popular worldwide, mainly for the fact that for the retail price of a Wii remote, you could purchase the Wii remote and a game. This proved a popular combination for consumers, and the game stayed in the charts for years.

Next on the list is Mario Kart Wii, a game released in 2008. It follows on the success of both the Mario franchise and the Mario Kart series, boasting online capabilities and loads of unlockables. Like Wii Play, it also has a freebie – a Wii Wheel, which you can put the Wiimote in and use to play. The third game on the list is Wii Fit, a fitness game that became popular in multiple countries and inspired a sequel, Wii Fit Plus. And surprise, surprise, it came with a freebie – the Wii Balance Board, a necessary piece of equipment that you stand on and use to play games and get weighed. As a matter of fact, six of the ten games on the list come with periphals.

Over on the 3rd party side of things, the top selling game here is Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, a game in the popular Guitar Hero franchise, and like the top 1st party game, comes with a periphal – the guitar. The third party list is more varied, with eight different companies claiming a spot. Only Ubisoft and Sega claimed more than one spot, with Ubisoft having Just Dance and Rayman Raving Rabbids and Sega developing both Mario and Sonic games.

In other news, Nintendo also announced that they had surpassed 30m Wii’s sold in America. This brings the Wii’s total sales to around 73m, meaning that America’s sales add up to over 1/3 of total Wii sales around the world. With a number of popular Nintendo franchises recieving Wii games this year and next year in America, will these sales increase even more?
